What is the Wifi service all about?
WiFi is a set of standards that enables you to access the internet on your laptop (or other supported device) through wireless technology. You can connect to the internet from anywhere within the range of the signal. WiFi locations where wireless broadband internet access is available are called zones or hotspots.
Who Provides the Service?
The City of Winnipeg has contracted with Shaw to provide the service in selected City facilities. Any concerns or questions regarding the service should be directed to Shaw support staff available at 1-855-BIZ-WIFI (1-855-249-9434) or email them at shawgowifi@sjrb.ca.
Where can I access the service?
The WiFi service is available at all Winnipeg Public Library locations. The service may not be available in all areas of each building. Every effort has been made to cover as much of the building as reasonably possible.
When is the service available?
For the most part, the service is being provided during the facility's open hours. For more information, download the Library's hours of operation.
Is there a charge for the service?
No. The service is free of charge!
Who is paying for this service?
This service is being provided by Shaw at no cost.
How do I get help using the service or when I'm having problems?
Any concerns or questions regarding the service should be directed to Shaw support staff available at 1-855-BIZ-WIFI (1-855-249-9434) or email them at shawgowifi@sjrb.ca.
What is the network name or SSID for the WiFi service?
When you scan for WiFi networks at your location, select the strongest signal that has the "WPG-Wifi" name. Depending on the location, you may see multiple networks listed with this name. This can happen when two or more access points are in close proximity to each other.
Can I print from my laptop or mobile device?
How do I log off of the WiFi service?
You can't explicitly log off of the WiFi service. The system will log you off after 30 minutes of inactivity.
How can I disconnect from the WiFi service?
There are a number of ways to disconnect from the WiFi service. You can power off your wireless device or you can turn off your wireless card or you can use your connection software to disconnect from the WiFi service. Closing your browser is not sufficient as an indication of inactivity to the system. Your device may have processes running in the background that are still accessing the internet such as email, instant messaging, etc.
What other WiFi service providers are in libraries?
MTS hotspots and ShawOpen WiFi Zones may also be found in libraries. These WiFi services are available 24/7 for MTS and Shaw residential customers only.
