Interlibrary Loan
The information on this page is for Winnipeg Public Library card holders. External libraries, please email wpl-illo@winnipeg.ca.
If the items you need are not found in our Winnipeg Public Library collections, we may be able to borrow the item from another library system elsewhere in Canada. To begin, fill in an Interlibrary Loan Request Form either online or in paper format (available at all library branches). The online form (linked below) will automatically be sent to library staff; completed paper forms can be returned to the reference desk at your local library.
Please note:
- A valid full membership Winnipeg Public Library card in good standing is required to make an interlibrary loan request. Your account is suspended if you owe fees of $50 or more or if you have 10 or more items overdue, and your request will not be processed.
- There is a limit of 5 requests per month per user.
- Please provide as much information as you can about the item you're requesting: author, title, publication date or edition if that is important, ISBN, etc.
- If you need something by a specific date, please indicate the date on the request form.
- Sometimes other library systems charge for interlibrary loans ($8-$25). Please indicate the maximum amount you're willing to pay if we can't borrow the item for free.
- Copyright law may limit the amount of information another library can photocopy and send.
For more information on the service, including a list of materials that are not available for ILL, please visit our Interlibrary Loan page.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the loan period for an interlibrary loan item?
The loan period depends on the owning library and is usually two to five weeks. Try to pick up your interlibrary loan as soon as we contact you, since the lending period begins on the day the item arrives here.
Can interlibrary loans be renewed?
Many interlibrary loan items are not renewable. Some institutions do allow renewals on requested materials, but if you would like to renew you must contact our interlibrary loan staff five days before the date the item is due. Contact staff by email or call 204-986-6491 to leave a message or talk to a staff member.
How long does it take for me to receive my requested interlibrary loan item?
Waiting times vary, but it can take up to two to three weeks, depending on the availability and the location of the item requested. We will notify you if the item is unavailable. We ask that you wait three weeks before contacting us for an update.
How will I be notified that my interlibrary loan has arrived?
The Library will notify you by phone or email (whichever contact method you choose on the Interlibrary Loan Request Form) when the item is available for pick-up. We will also inform you of the item's due date and any charges.
Where can I pick up and return my interlibrary loans?
You can pick up and return interlibrary loans only at the reference desks of the Millennium and St. Boniface library branches. At the Millennium Library, books and articles are picked up at the Main Service Desk on the 4th floor. At the St. Boniface Library, books and articles are picked up at the Service Desk on the 2nd floor. Interlibrary loans must be taken back to the Service Desk where they were signed out, not dropped off through the book chute.
