About the Library

Collections and Programs

Items for loan include Adult and Children's fiction and non-fiction, graphic novels, magazines, music, audiobooks, video games (Xbox, PS4, Nintendo Wii & Switch) and movies (DVDs and Blu-ray). As a branch of Winnipeg Public Library, members can also access an extensive eLibrary for downloadable eBooks, eMagazines, information resources and online journals, and streaming movies and music.

The Library offers programs and workshops for all ages. Browse our Upcoming Events to find what's on, or pick up a copy of At The Library. Some programs require registration. All library programs are free.

Facility and Services

St. James-Assiniboia Library is located beside the St. James Collegiate, close to Ferry Road at Portage Ave. The library is wheelchair accessible. The adult non-fiction, program and meeting room, and a newspaper/magazine room are on the second floor. The program room, and smaller conference room, is available to rent.

The Library has bookable computers with MS Office and Internet access, and free WiFi. There are tables for studying and small group work. Photocopying and printing is available for a fee. Scanning to email is free.

St. James library has a SAD light therapy lamp for use onsite, year round.

Tours for groups of any age and class visits are available. To book your tour or class visit contact the library.

For your convenience, there is an after-hours book return on the front of the building.

Battery Recycling is available in all branches of Winnipeg Public Library. Look for the Call2Recycle box and dispose your batteries using the bags provided.

History

St. James-Assiniboia Library opened in 1958. The library was built by the then independent city of St. James. It was expanded in 1963 and a second floor added in 1970, resulting in one of the largest branches in the Winnipeg Public Library system. The 25,351 sq. ft. library underwent some renovations in 2013-2014.
