History
The original Fort Garry Public Library first opened in 1956 in a 12' by 24' room in the municipal hall of the former Rural Municipality of Fort Garry. The current library on Pembina Highway was built in 1960, with an addition added in 1967 thanks to a bequest from the estate of Dr. A. W. Hogg. The library is an excellent example of Modernist architecture, characterized by its flat roof, cubic shape and open flowing floor plan.
The library's 9,334 sq. ft. was extensively renovated in 2014. A shard garden of remnants of demolished, historic buildings of Winnipeg was added as part of the 2014 renovations. Learn more about the shard garden. In 2016, the front entrance and landscaping was updated.
