World languages collection

Winnipeg Public Library offers a collection of material in over 20 world languages. The collection includes books for adults, teens, and children. A study of census data, newcomer information and material circulation information was completed to determine which languages in the collection are relevant, accessible, and sustainable moving forward.

Based on the study recommendations, the Winnipeg Public Library will offer materials in the following languages:

  • Amharic
  • Chinese
  • Gujarati
  • Korean
  • Punjabi
  • Spanish
  • Tigrinya
  • Vietnamese
  • Arabic
  • Farsi
  • Hindi
  • Polish
  • Russian
  • Swahili
  • Ukrainian
  • Bengali
  • German
  • Italian
  • Portuguese
  • Somali
  • Tagalog
  • Urdu

The following languages will no longer be available at Winnipeg Public Library:

  • Bosnian
  • Greek
  • Hungarian
  • Kurdish
  • Serbian
  • Thai
  • Croatian
  • Hebrew
  • Icelandic
  • Nepali
  • Swedish
  • Turkish
  • Finnish
  • Hmong
  • Japanese
  • Oromo
  • Tamil

The world languages collection will be updated to reflect the recommendations over the next few months as new material is acquired and added to circulation.

The Winnipeg Public Library is weeding the world language collection that is no longer in circulation. Community organizations or individuals who are interested in these materials can contact Irmy Nikkel.
