Public Engagement: St. Vital Library Renovation

About this project

The St. Vital Library renovation project was identified as a priority in the Library Redevelopment Strategy. The Library, located at 6 Fermor Ave, was the first modernist building in Winnipeg to receive a historical structure designation, but lacked the modern accessibility features. The St. Vital Library renovation is designed to provide the community with a refurbished and more accessible facility that maintains the key heritage features of the building.

The City is seeking public engagement on Phase 2 of the renovation project. Phase 2 renovations will provide new exterior ramp and entrance, washroom upgrades, improved parking, safer stairs, accessible collections and the addition of a second book return. There will also be new furniture, flooring, interior and exterior painting, a new tutorial room, and an indoor Family Literacy playground as well as a new roof and skylights.

The library and the architectural team are working with the Heritage Buildings and Resources Committee to ensure that the renovation project respects and preserves the library's heritage elements.

Background

The St. Vital Library opened in 1963 and was designated as a historical structure by the Heritage Buildings and Resources Committee in 1994.

The library circulated approximately 179,999 items and offered 233 free programs in 2015. The collection is approximately 40,000 items and the building is 17,300 sq. ft. in total, with 9583 sq. ft. of public space.

This is second phase of the renovation of St. Vital Library. The first phase, completed in 2015, involved the installation of an elevator to make the library more accessible.

We are in the final stages of design development with the architects. The goal is to start construction in early 2017 and open in early 2018.

Why are you renovating this library?

The library does not meet the needs of today's library user. It was not accessible. Improvements were needed such as relocating collections, technology, and services. The building will also be getting needed repairs including a new roof, new skylights, painting, flooring, and furniture.

The City of Winnipeg's 2013 Capital Budget provided funding for the St. Vital Library renovation project. The St. Vital Library was designated as a historical structure by the Heritage Buildings and Resources Committee in 2014. The library is the first modernist building in Winnipeg to receive this designation.
