The Library provides a range of basic and specialized computer workshops offered by staff and independent trainers. These 2 hour workshops range from very beginner (Level 1) to more advanced (Levels 2 and 3). All workshops are free.
Computer Basics 1
A gentle introduction to get you started with the basics of computer use, focusing on the functional skills you will need to have: turning a computer on & off, basics of using a mouse, how to use the different parts of Windows, and how to open and close programs.
Computer Basics 2
Expand on your understanding and use of computers. Learn more about using a mouse and learn typing skills, and more about how to navigate in Windows. Build on your experience!
Computer Basics 3
This course will teach you the basics of organizing files on a Windows computer. Learn about using external storage devices (and what the terminology means), some tips for keeping things organized, and other useful info.
This workshop will show you how to maintain a free email account. Learn how to receive and open, reply to, format and send emails. Participants will be given information on signing up for their own email addresses at the end of the course. Prerequisite: Participants should know how to use a web browser, and basic typing and mouse skills.
Are you curious about the Internet but not sure where to begin? This is a gentle introduction to using the Internet to search for information, including basic skills such as using a browser, using search engines like Google, and exploring opening or finding websites. Prerequisite: Participants should know the basics of how to navigate a computer, and basic typing and mouse skills.
Word Processing 1
Welcome to the world of creating documents! This workshop will teach you more about the use of the keyboard and mouse for editing text using Microsoft Word 2010. As well, you will learn basic skills for opening and saving documents, and how to format text for emphasis and style. Prerequisite: Participants should know the basics of how to navigate a computer, and basic typing and mouse skills.
Word Processing 2
Build on your Word Processing skills to improve the appearance of your Word documents. Learn skills to create lists, insert special characters, create tables, work with pictures, adjust the page layout, and preview it all before you print! Also watch a demonstration of how SkyDrive and GoogleDocs allow you to edit and store documents online. Prerequisite: Participants should know the basics of how to use Microsoft Word, and have some typing and mouse skills.
