Location
St. James-Assiniboia Library is located at 1910 Portage Avenue, right by St. James Collegiate and close to the corner of Ferry Road and Portage Avenue.
Parking
St. James-Assiniboia Library has 22 visitor parking stalls located on the west side of the building and two handicapped spots. Parking in front of the library is allowed after 5:30 p.m.
By Bus
The eastbound transit stop on Portage Avenue at Rutland Street is #20284. The stop westbound on Portage Avenue at Amherst Street is #20209.
Collections & Circulation
St.James-Assiniboia Library has a large, well developed collection of both Adult and Children's fiction and non-fiction and audiovisual materials. Special features include unique local history and newspaper files, an excellent art book collection, a strong classical music collection on CD, a large collection of large print books and a number of periodicals including Life and National Geographic that go back to the early 1900's. Also available are Express Bestsellers, books on CD and DVDs. St. James-Assiniboia Library circulates approximately 285,000 items a year.
Facility Features
St.James-Assiniboia Library has a large reference and reading room on the 2nd floor which houses the newspaper and magazine collection. This area is suitable for quiet study and research, as well as providing computers for Internet use.
A meeting room is available for public use - a Program Room on the 2nd floor acommodating up to 60. (More information about meeting room for rent here.) Call 204-986-3424 to make arrangements. For the convenience of our customers, a book chute for the return of materials after hours is located to the left of the front door of the library.

Call2Recycle Battery Recycling
Winnipeg Public Library has joined the Call2Recycle battery recycling initiative. All libraries now have special recycling boxes where you can dispose of batteries and cell phones. Simply put your used batteries and cell phones in the bags provided and we'll do the rest.

History
St.James-Assiniboia Library opened in 1958. The library was built by the then independent city of St.James. It was expanded in 1963 and a second floor added in 1970, resulting in a 23,000 sq. ft facility, one of the largest branches in the Winnipeg Public Library system.
