bullet Special Services houses the Millennium Library’s collections of alternate formats and collections for borrowers with special needs. The staff of Special Services would be happy to assist you with any of our collections:

bulletALTERNATE FORMATS

DVD and VHS video recordings
The largest collection in Winnipeg Public Library containing educational, recreational and classic/award winning feature films is housed in Special Services at Millennium. Many videos and DVDs have closed captioning for the hearing impaired; in addition, many of the DVDs also have foreign language tracks or captioning. If you can’t find it at your local video store ask us!

Compact Discs
Winnipeg Public Library has many musical genres available on compact disc including classical, international, jazz, country and popular to name a few.


Audiobooks
The Winnipeg Public Library audiobook collection is comprised of both compact discs and audio cassettes with a wide variety of titles available in fiction and non-fiction.


CD-ROMs Winnipeg Public Library’s collection of adult CD-ROMs in English is housed in the Special Services department at Millennium. Everything from grammar to clip art is available in this collection.

Scores
When you are looking for the words and music for that certain song for an occasion or just to get it out of your head, ask us -- we just might have it! The Score collection has music from most genres with a focus on popular songs.  Most Scores are piano, guitar and vocal editions.


bulletSERVICES FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED

Large Type
A comprehensive collection of leisure reading is available in Large Type for those of us who prefer larger print.  Bestsellers, mysteries, romance, westerns, biographies and other non-fiction titles, and Reader’s Digest periodicals are available for any Winnipeg Public Library borrower.


Talking Books
The talking book collection is available only to registered borrowers with print disabilities of Winnipeg Public Library.  The collection consists mainly of two track audio cassettes of recreational titles obtained from the CNIB, Crane Library, and B.C Library services as well as a growing collection of DAISY compact discs. Registration for this collection is available through Special Services.


Descriptive DVDs and Videos
Watch a movie with your friends or family! Winnipeg Public Library has a small collection of popular titles that are available in both DVD and VHS video formats. These descriptive titles have a narration describing action, location or expression, whenever the movie dialogue allows. No special equipment is necessary to view these titles. They are available to all borrowers.

Talking Terminal

Specials Services has a Talking Terminal. This is a dedicated computer terminal which provides Winnipeg Public Library catalogue and Internet access for persons with print disabilities through both Zoom text and Jaws.


Magnifiers
As well as a conventional lighted magnifier, Special Services also have Optelec Readers, which provide magnification of print material through the use of closed circuit color television.


TTY Telephone
Deaf borrowers have access to information and their accounts through the use of the Special Services TTY telephone line. Messages may be left on this line by deaf or hard of hearing borrowers.


bulletADULT LEARNERS AND NEW CANADIANS

Language Learning
Whether you are a new Canadian wishing to improve your English skills or a traveler wanting to experience a new culture and language, Special Services has a variety of materials to help you. We have cassettes, compact discs, videos, DVDs, and CD-ROMs for English, French, German, Spanish and many other languages for beginning to advanced learners.

ABE (Adult Basic Education)
This collection is designed for the Adult Learner wishing to upgrade their literacy, numeric or basic life skills. A combination of print material, cassette, compact disc and video formats are available in simplified fiction and non-fiction for students to improve their skills or prepare for GED testing. This collection is often useful for new Canadians who wish to strengthen their English language training.

 
ABE Book Club Kits
An ABE Book Club Kit is a bag with 15 copies of the same book, and one Reading Guide. Kits are for reading groups that would all like to read the same book and then meet together to talk about the book. This is a great way to practice your English reading and conversation skills, and have fun! The Reading Guide includes information about the author and discussion questions to help your group get started. We have many different books to choose from. Some are levelled readers, some are short novels, and some are true stories. 


ESL (English as a Second Language)

The ESL collection in Special Services has been gathered together specifically to create a collection of print material, videos, DVDs, compact discs and audio cassettes which would be of help for new Canadians learning English as a second language.


TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, CanTEST and GED Test Preparation
Special Services has within its’ various collections, materials for preparation and sample tests for the TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, CanTEST AND GED tests. Study materials are available in book/cassette, book/CD, CD-ROM and video formats.

Multilingual
Special Services has a multilingual collection of materials in many languages. They include: Albanian, Amharic, Arabic, Bengali, Bosnian, Chinese, Croation, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Farsi, Finnish, Filipino, German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Panjabi, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Somali, Spanish, Thai, Ukrainian, Urdu and Vietnamese.

Fiction, non-fiction, magazines and newspapers are available, in this browsing (uncatalogued) collection, for borrowers who require or enjoy reading in other languages.
